Happy Valentine’s Day

Lover Of My Soul

I’ve spent some of my day today reading the Song Of Solomon. Solomon and his lover, soon to be wife, The Shulamite , sing back and forth to each other in the rich poetic language of gardens, fruit and spices , young stags on the mountains , a spring locked a fountain sealed. So many have written commentaries on this book trying to explain the thinly veiled imagery of first love, and the expectation of the lovers. There are other characters in the tale and I recommend having a read of it for yourself. If you’re a lover at heart and a lover of poetry, you’ll love it. It’s said that Solomon wrote thousands of songs but here is the only one we have ! The only one preserved.

I’ve referenced some of Solomon’s lyrics in other songs I’ve written, ‘Come Away‘, and ‘Love Song‘ – ie pinched a lyric or two – common practice with Psalms and sacred text, so I don’t feel so bad. Setting that kind of work to music and then layering it with vocal harmonies is a different thing altogether, and that I enjoy very much. You’ll find them , in part, on my Youtube channel.

This original song , ( I didn’t pinch any of Solomon’s work for this one …lol ) , “Lover Of My Soul“, is a combined effort of myself the singer and composer of music and lyrics, David Holmes on the Guitar ( Syd AU ) and Jeff Eacho on Flutes ( NC USA )

Happy Valentine’s Day !
