Avinu Malkenu

Our Father Our King

In 2019 I was learning Hebrew and it really helped to learn songs in Hebrew. I came across this prayerful song, not really understanding the significance of it. So let me explain.

Many people ask me, ‘why does an Anglo-Saxon Australian Woman have such an interest in Hebrew and Jewish life. What is it about you and Israel ‘?

Well I was named after 2 Jewesses . Deborah and Abigail. I practice a Jesus based faith. It is a spiritual practise , not a religious one. I understand church and oragnised religion has it’s place in society , but not for me at this time. I do miss it sometimes. I attend a lot of online services , pray , meditate, read the Word and worship everyday. That is my practise. It is walked out daily in my life.

The Jewishness of Torah, written in Hebrew , the Bible ( Hebrew and Greek ) and Jesus add so much depth and texture to my spiritual practise. It is the God of Israel that the Bible is written by and about. And through Jewish people . Two thirds of the bible is prophecy and we are seeing that play out in real time right now on the world stage.

Yahweh, Adonai, God Almighty , The Creator – has what we call Kodesh Moedim or Holy Appointed Times – these are the Jewish feast days or Holy Days and they rich with meaning. We are right now on the cusp of Yom Kipur , the Day Of Atonement having just celebrated Rosh Hashana – The New Year. On Rosh Hashana we say , “May your name be found in the book of life”.

On Rosh Hashana it is written, on Yom Kipur it is sealed. This song Avinu Malkenu is traditionally sung over these 2 appointed times. And in the 7 days in between – the Days of Awe, when we examine ourselves . I encourage you to do a deep dive into the meanings of God’s Appointed Times His Holy Convocations or Gatherings – His Kodesh Moedim. You’ll be surprised what you’ll find. Maranatha !
